We’ve awarded TotalAV Essential Antivirus two stars because the other tools you get as part of the package are surprisingly decent, especially the VPN tool and duplicate file finder. Its on-demand scanning fared better, but was still not as good as most of the other antimalware apps we’ve reviewed. The important fact that TotalAV Essential Antivirus failed to catch all but two of the 26 malware samples is very disappointing. For example, while it found duplicate photos, it didn’t show previews of them, forcing us to open them in Finder to ensure they are actually identical. The duplicates finder was also effective in our tests, although the user interface was a little primitive. Ever wanted to appear to the Internet as if you’re online in Moldova, or Malaysia, or New Zealand? Well, now you can. We then ran a full system scan to see if TotalAV Essential Antivirus would spot the many malware samples that now littered the hard disk. We couldn’t check to see what malware the app claims to catch, via the VirusTotal database, because TotalAV isn’t listed there. Out of 26 malware samples, TotalAV Essential Antivirus caught just two, and was only able to remove one of them. When we looked, the malware hadn’t been deleted. After waiting 10 minutes, we had to Force Quit. However, TotalAV Essential Antivirus froze with the pinwheel of death when we asked it to delete the malware. Then it failed to spot several more malware samples we unzipped, before it caught another-this time the Proton malware. We opted to have TotalAV Essential Antivirus delete it. TotalAV Essential Antivirus caught the MaMi malware. We wouldn’t expect to see much of a performance hit for beefy desktops and laptops, but underpowered budget machines might not be as happy with this suite. And then something actually quite shocking occurred. Performance is good in a number of areas, but overall it has some improvement to do. TotalAV’s got you covered for the most common forms of malware, but its zero-day chops are concerning. The unarchive time was about a minute faster with TotalAV running, and encoding a large video file with Handbrake was nearly five minutes faster with TotalAV installed. TotalAV also shaved off about 8 seconds from the archiving test. Transferring a large set of files of around 50GB was about a minute faster with TotalAV running. Performance was a little better with our file-transfer test. TotalAV’s drop was not as drastic in the gaming section of the test, nor was the drop too bad during the rendering and visualization portion of the digital content creation test.

We aren’t huge fans of these utilities since features like this are either already built in to Windows 10 or available for fee. IDGĬlicking on the speedometer icon in the left rail shows all of the various system tune-up options available including an application uninstaller, startup manager, and browser cleanup. Typically, these types of premium features are reserved for the more expensive suites. Features like this are pretty rare on base-level antivirus programs. In our tests, it did a pretty good job of analyzing duplicate files based on their contents. The smart scan is a nice touch beyond typical malware scans, especially the duplicate finder.
